Ataşehir is a district of Istanbul on the Anatolian side.  Maltepe to the south, Kadıköy to the south west, Üsküdar to the west, Umraniye to the north, Çekmeköy to the north, and Sancaktepe to the east are the neighboring districts.

While it was a neighborhood in Kadıköy, it reached the district status in 2008.  Ataşehir has an area of 25,84 km² with 17 neighborhoods and a population of 361,621.

In early 1993, the "satellite city" project, which started with the participation of the Emlak Bank, set the foundations of Ataşehir. In 2005, Ataşehir has become a center of attraction for Ağaoğlu, TOKİ, Varyap and such other big construction companies in means of investment and by 2005 gained municipality status.

The Ataşehir District was established in March 2008 by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in accordance with the Law on the ‘Establishment of the District within the Boundaries of the Metropolitan Municipality and Amendments’. Ataşehir District, which is composed of 3 neighborhoods from Üsküdar (e.g, Esatpaşa and Fatah), 7 from Kadıköy (Atatürk, Barbaros, İçerenköy, İnönü, Kayışdağı, Küçükbakkalköy, Yenisahra), 3 from Umraniye and 1 from Kartal (Samandıra), established Ataşehir Municipality after the local elections in 2009.

Ataşehir is also quite developed as of its natural environment. Lots of green parks, rolling bike trails and picnic areas are available in Ataşehir. The Kayışdağı Forest on the slopes of Kayış Mountain, 438 meters high behind the town, adds a distinctive beauty to this district.
